Now that you know the difference between a simple cook and a chef, you need to realize that there are even more distinctions to be made. Here are some of the great careers chefs can go into after going to culinary school.
- Executive Chef - Also known as the Chef de Cuisine, the executive chef is in charge of an entire kitchen operation.
- Sous Chef (Assistant Chef) - Think of a sous chef as a vice-president or the right-hand man (or woman) who assists the Executive Chef run a kitchen.
- Senior Chef - Formally known as a Chef de Partie, a Senior Chef has one particular menu specialty. They may also help with overseeing kitchen preparation.
- Demi Chef - This is similar to a Senior Chef in many ways. A good example would be a Demi Chef who specializes in Sushi or another dish.
- Pastry Chefs - As the name suggests, these chefs specialize in pastries and desserts.
While there may be other duties and responsibilities that a chef will be in charge of at a restaurant or working for a private employer, the different types of chefs described above are what most people with a culinary school degree will become as they enter the workforce.
